Smell that? It’s bread baking. Raise your hand if you like the smell of bread cooking (especially first thing in the morning). Nice showing. What are some other things you can think of that delight your senses? How about squishing your toes in the mud during a warm summer rainstorm. Maybe you like sitting on the front porch with your coffee watching the sunrise or bundling up in the winter to go out and help your kids make a snowman. Perhaps you just like having a manicure or facial. Write down a list of all the things that you like. Now take some scissors, cut out each item on your list, put them all in a jar and pull out at least one per day. It’s important we take time each day to do something we love, even if it’s something as simple as smelling a fragrance that reminds us of a happy time in our childhood.
One of the easiest things to do is to start a journal. It doesn’t have to be elaborate, something as simple as writing down the things that make you happy and later reflecting on those things when you become stressed out, depressed or unhappy. One thing on my list is that I love the smell of chlorine bleach. It reminds me of happy summers spent at the pool with my grandpa. Every time I smell bleach I am transported back to a time when life was about splashing, playing, living and fun. The journal can help us remember the good times and put positive thoughts in our heads. We can also write the things for which we are thankful to help remind us how good we have it when we’re in the midst of one of life’s storms.
Find your happy thoughts, smells, sounds, tastes and incorporate them into your every day life and see how much more joyful you become. Where can you transport yourself today?
